The First Ten Minutes After You Buy an Account
Everything that decides whether an account stays yours happens in the first ten minutes. Not in the checkout, and not in the reviews you read beforehand. Here is the whole sequence, in order, with the reason each step exists.
Print it, or keep this tab open while you do it. It takes about eight minutes.
Minute 0 to 2: take the email first
Before you log in anywhere, before you look at the inventory, before anything fun.
- Log into the email account itself, not just the game. If you were given credentials for a mailbox, open it and confirm you are actually inside it.
- Change the email password immediately. This is the single most important action in this entire list.
- Remove every recovery option that is not yours. Alternate addresses, phone numbers, security questions someone else knows the answer to.
- Turn on two-factor on the email, using your own device.
Everything else on this page depends on this step. An account is only as secure as the mailbox that can reset it, and a seller who still controls that mailbox still controls the account, no matter what else you change.
Minute 2 to 5: take the game or service account
Now, and only now, log into the thing you actually bought.
- Change the account password. Different from the email password.
- Check which email address is on file and change it to one you control if it is not already.
- Remove any linked phone number. This is the recovery path people forget, because it is invisible from the login screen.
- Disable the old two-factor and set up your own. If the seller's authenticator is still attached, they can still complete a recovery you cannot block.
- Sign out all other sessions. Almost every platform has this button. Most buyers never press it.
Minute 5 to 7: check what you actually received
| What to check | Where it usually lives | What a problem looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Account status | Settings, account or support page | Any warning, restriction or suspension notice |
| The specific items you paid for | Inventory or profile | Missing, or fewer than the listing showed |
| Rank or level | Career or profile page | Lower than advertised, or decayed |
| Linked payment methods | Wallet or billing | Anything saved that is not yours, remove it |
| Region setting | Account settings | Different from where you will actually use it |
The payment row matters more than it looks. A card belonging to someone else can be charged back later, and platforms routinely suspend the account when that happens, with you holding it.
Minute 7 to 8: write down what you got
Take three screenshots and keep them somewhere that is not the account itself.
- The account status page showing no restrictions.
- The inventory or profile showing what you paid for.
- The security settings after your changes, showing your email and your two-factor.
If something goes wrong in week four, this is the difference between a claim and an argument. It costs one minute now and it is the only evidence you will ever have.
What to do if a step will not complete
A locked step is not a technical hiccup. It is the account telling you it is not fully yours.
If you cannot change the email, cannot remove a phone number, or cannot disable the existing two-factor, stop and contact the seller before you invest any time in the account. Do not play on it, do not buy anything on it, and do not connect your own payment method.
A seller acting in good faith will fix it in minutes, because they have done this before and they know exactly which setting is stuck. A seller who goes quiet at this point has told you what you needed to know while you can still act on it.
Where each step can still go wrong later
| Step you skipped | What happens later |
|---|---|
| Email password unchanged | Previous owner resets everything, at any time |
| Phone number left attached | Recovery code goes to them, and you never see it |
| Old two-factor still active | They approve a recovery you cannot block |
| Sessions not signed out | They keep using the account alongside you |
| No screenshots | Nothing to point at when you file a claim |
Each row is one recovery path. The free Account Safety Check walks through all eight of them and writes the message to send the seller before you pay, which is the cheaper time to find out.
How this should feel
Boring. That is the point.
On a well-prepared account every step above either is already done or takes fifteen seconds. If you find yourself fighting the account, that friction is information, and it arrives early enough to be useful. On ACC2BUY orders the email is transferred and two-factor is cleared before delivery, so most of this list is confirmation rather than work, and the warranty has no deadline if something still surfaces later.
Frequently asked questions
What if I bought a licence rather than an account? Steps one and two do not apply. Activate it immediately on the device you will actually use, and keep the confirmation. A licence that activates cleanly on your hardware is effectively settled.
How long should I wait before playing on it? Finish the whole list first. Time spent on an account you have not secured is time you may be donating to the previous owner.
Can I skip signing out other sessions? You can, and it is the step people regret most often. An active session can survive a password change on several platforms.
What if the seller says removing the phone number is not possible? On almost every major platform it is possible. Treat "not possible" as either inexperience or a reason to stop, and ask them to show you the security settings page.
